Obituary for Wayne Martin Moreau

Dr. Wayne Martin Moreau, 76, of Gouldsboro PA, passed away peacefully at home on January 1, 2018 surrounded by his family after a short but courageous fight with sarcoma. Wayne is survived by his wife of 50 years, Dr. Nancy (Harvilchuck) Moreau, son David Moreau and his wife Zory of Syracuse, NY, daughter Dr. Deborah Dihel and her husband Jeff of Richland, WA, grandchildren Logan and Lauren Dihel, and Maria and Patrick Moreau. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Wendell S. Moreau, Jr. At the time of his death, Dr. Moreau was a retired IBMer and an online statistics professor at Northampton Community College in Tannersville PA.

Wayne was the younger son of the late Wendell S. and Sabina (Sluzar) Moreau. A lifelong learner, he was born in Chicopee, Massachusetts, and a graduate of Chicopee High School. He received his Bachelors in Chemistry from University of Massachusetts Amherst, and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Northeastern University. He started working at IBM in Fishkill, New York State, where he met his wife, Nancy, on a blind date. They moved to Wappingers Falls NY where they bought a home and started a family. Dr. Moreau was a decorated inventor in the science of semi-conductors, held numerous patents and authored a reference book entitled “Semiconductor Lithography”. He retired from IBM in 2002 but soon started teaching chemistry classes at Dutchess Community College, in Poughkeepsie, NY. He was also an avid tennis and softball player, and liked to reminiscence about his no-hitter for which the signed game ball was displayed in the dining room. He also enjoyed stock car racing, Boston Red Sox, and the New England Patriots.

Wayne retired to Gouldsboro PA in 2005 where he enjoyed evening fishing excursions on the lake, golfing, blueberry picking, shoveling snow, landscaping, chasing geese and staying busy working around the property. He made sure all visitors had the chance to hook a big fish on his Jitterbug, and always had a camera to document the catch. His very favorite thing was a back scratch.

Dr. Moreau, an advocate for the community, was Chairman of the Town Planning Commission, member of the Gouldsboro United Methodist Church and President of the Gouldsboro Historical Society. Gifted with a teaching spirit, he adopted the museum in the Gouldsboro train station, adding an ice house model and other pictures/videos to explain the history of the local area. He created activities for visiting families to explore the museum offerings. When he learned of his illness, he initiated the construction of the Moreau Family Pavilion, as a lasting legacy for happy gatherings for the community at the train station.

A Celebration of Life will be held on July 7, 2018 in the Pavilion at Gouldsboro Train Station. Donations in his memory can be made to the Gouldsboro Historical Society, 543 Main Street, Gouldsboro, PA 18424. Arrangements are entrusted to Brian Arthur Strauch Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, LLC in Spring Brook Twp.
