Obituary for Dr. Rev. Gerald H. "Jerry" Major

Dr. Reverend Gerald “Jerry” H. Major, Jr., 87, a resident of Elmhurst Twp. died on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at home. He and his wife, the former Janice Bittle would have celebrated 58 years of marriage on November 26th.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Gerald H., Sr. and Ruth M. (Ivey) Major. Jerry served in the U.S. Army Reserves during the Korean War. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Bob Jones University and his Doctor of Theology from Evangelical Bible Seminary.

Jerry dedicated his life to serving his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, faithfully ministering in the Greater Scranton area his entire life. From 1955 to 1973, Jerry served as the director of Youth For Christ. While in YFC, Jerry traveled to numerous countries in Africa leading teen teams, ministering through music, where he enjoyed playing the trumpet and sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He served as an associate pastor at Faith Community Church in Glenburn from 1977 to 1985. Until retirement he trained nationals to do ministry in their own countries through International Needs. For over 40 years, Jerry provided faithful service as a member of the board of directors of the Missionary Retreat Fellowship.

He loved the outdoors. Whether searching for the next big buck or casting a line seeking his next big catch, Jerry loved being outside enjoying the world his God created. He also spent a lot of time with his kids and grand-kid's water skiing and snowmobiling.

In addition to his wife, Janice, Jerry is survived by: his son, Gerald, III “Maj” and his wife Marilyn of Elmhurst Twp.; his daughter, Sandy Esquirell and her husband Dan of Harleysville; his sister, Joanne Major of Ft. Washington, PA; his grandchildren: Gerald IV, Kyle and his wife Brenna and Jenny Major & Ryan and his wife Marybeth, Austin & Lindsey Esquirell; along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his twin sister, Geraldine “Jean” Smith.

The family would like to especially thank Karen Goodheart, his faithful caregiver with At-Home Quality Care, for her devoted service to dad and mom.

The funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 16 at 5:30 pm at Parker Hill Church, Clarks Summit Campus, 607 North Abington Road in Clarks Summit, the Rev. Mark Stuenzi officiating. A viewing will be held on Sunday from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm at the church.
