Obituary for Arthur M. Hughes

Arthur M. Hughes, Jr., 89, of Covington Twp died on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at home. He was the husband of Charlotte (Watkins) Hughes and the couple was married for 67 years on June 17.

Born in Gouldsboro, he was the son of the late Arthur, Sr. and Miriam (Peirce) Hughes and graduated from Scranton Central High School. Arthur proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and prior to retiring, was the owner and operator of AM Hughes Garage in Daleville.

Active in the community, Art was a member of the Daleville United Methodist Church, served on the Board of Directors of the Moscow Cemetery Association, was the oldest living Past Master (1958) of Moscow Lodge # 504 F&AM. He also gave back to his community and always went out of his way to help others through his service in the Covington Independent Fire Company, Inc, where he was an Assistant Chief and Fire Chief. He also was an EMT, a Fire Warden and a member of the Keystone State Fire Chiefs Association.

A man of integrity, Art was a role model for the younger generation to look to for guidance and wisdom. He was a kind, generous and hardworking man that loved his family and his cat: Candy.

In addition to his wife, Charlotte, he is survived by his daughters: Ginger Vaughan and her husband Trevor of Canonsburg, PA & Marilyn Calley and her husband Roy of Brooklyn, MI; his sister Kay Jones of Gouldsboro; his brother: Willard Hughes and his wife Chris of Cincinnati, OH; his grandchildren: Brent Calley and his wife Galaxia, Shawn Hughes and his fiancee Kathryn, Bradley Heider, Trevor Vaughan and his wife Steph, Joanie Tomashunas and husband Jason, Nicole Grems, Daniel Heider and his wife Brigitte, Carrie Grant and her husband James, Mari Park and her husband Frank and Miranda Hughes; and 18 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Arthur J. Hughes.

Art's family would like to thank Ann Marie Townend and the staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the kindness and caring they afforded to him.

The funeral service will be on Thursday, January 25 at 10:30 am at Brian Arthur Strauch Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, LLC 3 First St in Spring Brook Twp. Interment with military honors will follow in Fairview Memorial Park in Elmhurst Twp.

Viewing will be on Wednesday, January 24 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the funeral home.
