Mr. William F. Holmes
October 12, 1924 - April 27, 2017
William Francis Holmes, Jr, 92, of Covington Twp died on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore. He and his wife, the former Barbara Jane (Jervis) celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on June 26, 2016.
Born in Archbald, he was the son of the late William Francis and Elizabeth (Burke) Holmes and was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. He was called to active duty in the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the 104th Infantry Division, Timberwolves, 413th Infantry Co. Bill was a decorated veteran, receiving the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and ETO ribbon with two Bronze Stars. Throughout his life, he exhibited his patriotism by displaying the American flag outside his home daily.
After returning to the Scranton area, Bill was employed by Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania before retiring after 33 years. He was a member of the Wilson-Conklin American Legion Post 579 in Moscow, John J. Michaels Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5207 in Covington Twp, the NRA, the Telephone Pioneers and St. Catherine of Siena Church in Moscow.
In addition to his wife Barbara, Bill is survived by his two daughters: Pamela (Holmes) Brantley and her husband Robert of Sandy, UT and Michele Holmes of Moscow; his brother: Robert Holmes of Kingsville, MD; his granddaughter: Elise; his grandson: Brian and his great grandsons: Owen & Maddox. He was preceded in death by his son: William Joseph Holmes and his brothers: John Holmes and Dr. George Holmes.
The funeral will be on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at 10:30 am from Brian Arthur Strauch Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, LLC, 3 First St in Spring Brook Twp with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am in St. Catherine of Siena Church, 220 Church St in Moscow to be celebrated by Father Robert Simon. Military Honors will be rendered following the Mass. Interment with Rite of Committal will be private in St. Catherine's Cemetery in Covington Twp.
Viewing will be on Monday, May 1 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
